LibrePlan 1.6.0 Released: Major Update Brings New Collaboration Features, Expanded Internationalization, and Renewed Focus on Open Source Accessibility
The LibrePlan team today announced the release of LibrePlan 1.6.0, a
major new version of the open source web-based project management
platform.
LibrePlan is designed for organizations that require advanced project
planning, resource allocation, and project tracking capabilities while
maintaining full control over their own infrastructure and data. Since
2009, LibrePlan has been used worldwide by companies, governments,
educational institutions, and non-profit organizations seeking a
transparent and sovereign alternative to proprietary project management
software.
Version 1.6.0 introduces a broad range of improvements focused on
collaboration, project visibility, governance, and international
accessibility.
“LibrePlan 1.6.0 is about making professional project management more
accessible, more collaborative, and more internationally available
than ever before,” said Jeroen Baten, project leader of LibrePlan. “We
believe open source project management software should remain
transparent, sovereign, and accessible to organizations everywhere.”
Improved Communication and Collaboration
LibrePlan 1.6.0 introduces several new capabilities intended to improve
communication and daily collaboration within organizations.
New functionality includes:
- Email functionality for all major groups of users
- Per-project document repositories
- Improved communication workflows through configurable email
templates and notification capabilities
These additions help teams centralize communication and project-related
information while improving coordination between stakeholders.
Better Project Visibility and Governance
The new release also delivers several improvements aimed at giving
project managers and organizations better operational insight into
ongoing work.
New project management capabilities include:
- Integrated issue and risk log management
- A project pipeline overview
- Project margin tracking within the general project configuration
- Traffic light-style project status indicators in project overviews,
allowing project managers to immediately identify projects that
require attention
Together, these features help organizations improve governance, monitor
project health more effectively, and identify potential risks earlier in
the planning process.
Massive Expansion of Translation Support
One of the most remarkable improvements in LibrePlan 1.6.0 is the
dramatic expansion of its translation support.
Historically, LibrePlan supported four core languages: English, Spanish,
French, and Galician. While this already enabled international adoption,
the LibrePlan community wanted to make the platform accessible to many
more users around the world.
Rather than waiting years for traditional localization efforts, the
LibrePlan project chose a pragmatic approach: using AI-assisted
translation tooling to rapidly expand internationalization efforts while
inviting the global open source community to help refine and improve the
results over time.
As part of this effort, 15 additional languages were added for help
texts and email templates:
- Czech (cs)
- German (de)
- Persian / Farsi (fa_IR)
- Italian (it)
- Norwegian Bokmål (nb)
- Dutch (nl)
- Polish (pl)
- Portuguese (pt)
- Portuguese Brazil (pt_BR)
- Russian (ru)
- Swedish (sv_SE)
- Ukrainian (uk)
- Chinese (zh)
- Chinese Simplified (zh_CN)
This brings LibrePlan’s total language support to 19 languages.
Because these translations were generated using AI-assisted tooling,
they have not yet undergone complete human review. The LibrePlan team
hopes that members of the international open source community will help
improve the translations over time by reporting issues, suggesting
corrections, and contributing refinements.
While AI-generated translations are not perfect, the project considers
this an important step forward. Correcting and improving existing
translations is dramatically easier than translating thousands of lines
entirely from scratch.
The LibrePlan team believes AI can play a valuable supporting role in
open source projects by lowering barriers for internationalization and
helping communities make software accessible to a truly global audience.
Community Edition and Enterprise Subscription
LibrePlan is available in two editions: LibrePlan Community Edition and
LibrePlan Enterprise.
The Community Edition remains fully open source and freely available.
Beginning with version 1.6.0, it includes integrated donation links
intended to help support continued development of the platform.
Like many successful open source initiatives, LibrePlan faces the
ongoing challenge of balancing widespread adoption with sustainable
long-term funding and development. The project hopes these new support
mechanisms will help ensure continued innovation and maintenance in the
years ahead.
For organizations that require a cleaner deployment experience and
professional support options, LibrePlan Enterprise is available as a
subscription-based offering. The Enterprise Edition does not contain
donation references and is intended for professional production
environments.
Availability
LibrePlan 1.6.0 is available immediately.
A public demonstration environment can be accessed at:
More information about the project can be found at:
Docker images for the Community Edition are also available through
Docker Hub.
Organizations, contributors, translators, testers, and open source
enthusiasts are invited to explore LibrePlan 1.6.0, provide feedback,
and help shape the future of open source project management software.
